Difficult Topics, Successful Conversations:

An Approach to Building Intimacy

Most couples have topics they find difficult to talk about. These might include money, religion, sex, or childrearing, to name a few. Typically these conversations are difficult because they highlight the differences we have with our partner.

Some issues are so difficult to discuss that they become a major barrier to a couple’s intimacy. If these conversations are left unfinished, either or both partners might experience ongoing resentment, loneliness, fear, shame, guilt, or helplessness.

In this practical, experiential weekend workshop, couples will learn specific techniques for initiating and completing difficult conversations. Couples will have an opportunity to practice new skills and approaches and to gain feedback from faculty who remain sensitive to the couple’s privacy. Faculty will be actively available for private coaching sessions throughout the workshop.

Conversations between partners are held in private, but there will be much opportunity for group discussion and feedback surrounding the work.

Benefits

Participating couples will:

  • Learn effective communication skills for balanced and productive conversations.
  • Identify where communication gets “stuck”, and learn how to move through it.
  • Practice a new communication model.
  • Received personalized, private coaching from experienced practitioners.
  • Have an opportunity, by the end of the weekend, to increase intimacy by completing a difficult conversation.

Participants

All couples who wish to improve the quality of their communication and build intimacy in their relationship are welcome and encouraged to attend.

“We attended a workshop about how to have difficult conversations with your partner. We came away with a vastly increased understanding of how such conversations work -- and don’t work. More importantly, we came away with methods to use -- methods that were taught to us in such a way that we will actually be able to
remember them and how to use them. And at the time of the workshop, when we were going through something very difficult, it gave us immediate help. Stuart and
Sharona are excellent communicators — articulate, sensitive, and adaptable. They have both kindness and real wisdom”
